Mercy Varsity Hockey won the Division 1 State Championship title on March 12 against Grosse Pointe South (GPS). Winning the game 3-2, the team took home the state championship trophy for the second year in a row.

GPS scored first, giving the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead. Shortly after, Mercy junior Emily McCann scored, tying the game. Minutes later, sophomore Makena Duval gave the Marlins a 2-1 lead. GPS followed with a goal, evening the score again. At the end of the second period, junior Sophie Van Acker struck the puck past the goalie to put the score at 3-2 in Mercy’s favor.

After a scoreless third period, the Marlins were declared state champions once again.

“It was a moment I won’t ever forget,” said junior captain Hannah Hamilton. “We have worked so hard this entire season, and winning the championship capped it all off perfectly.”
