Every year, the Junior Classical League (JCL) hosts the annual Salmagundi fundraiser. Money raised by Salmagundi is used to pay for club meetings, costs, and transportation to JCL conventions along with subsidizing club T-shirt and National Latin Exam costs. In order to retain JCL membership, each member must bring in an item to sell or volunteer to work the stand for an hour and a half time slot.

Salmagundi is an English word meaning “assortment,” so, fittingly, the fundraiser offers an assortment of items that students can purchase. A table is stationed in the south alcove, which displays different treats and knick knacks created by the Latin students. The fundraiser is operated throughout the whole day on December 10 and 11 by JCL members.

“JCL receives no funding from the school at all,” said JCL moderator and Latin teacher Mrs. Lauren Marquard. “Each club is only able to host one fundraiser a year, so Salmagundi is very important for paying for club activities and transportation.”

There is a lot of work that goes into Salmagundi preparation by both the JCL members and officers.

“We have to make posters for advertisements, make announcements to the school, have meetings to plan and strategize along with bringing in items to sell and working the stand,” said junior Gabby Pough, a JCL officer.

Mrs. Marquard has seen all sorts of unique creations including homemade candles, stickers of staff members, and ornaments.

“Salmagundi is a great opportunity for students to express their creativity,” said Mrs. Marquard. “I think that is why the staff, especially, enjoys it.”

Salmagundi is held right before Christmas every year, making it the perfect spot to pick up a last minute gift for friends and family.

“I encourage all students to stop by and show some support to the JCL members,” said Mrs. Marquard.
