Excitement filled the auditorium as students and staff gathered to celebrate a major moment at Mercy naming the 2026 Teacher of the Year. When Spanish teacher Julia Cilona was announced as the winner, the reaction was immediate cheers, excitement, and a wave of pride from the very students that voted for her and that she has spent years inspiring.
“I’m very honored and overwhelmed and grateful,” Cilona said shortly after the announcement. Her response captured exactly why she was chosen not just for her teaching, but for the genuine care and humility she brings to the classroom every day.
For many seniors, this moment felt especially meaningful. Cilona has been a part of their high school journey from the beginning, making her upcoming role as graduation Emcee even more special.
“Yes, I am really excited to be able to end your four years like that with you guys,” Cilona said.
Senior Mattie Green described Julia Cilona in one word, caring. Having experienced her teaching both in the classroom and abroad, Mattie saw this firsthand during the annual Spain trip that Cilona leads for students each year. She shared that Cilona goes out of her way to make every student feel supported and included, creating meaningful connections that extend far beyond school.
In a lighthearted twist, Cilona admitted she was actually more nervous about her students’ reaction than the outcome itself.
“100% I was more nervous about my advisor’s reaction than I was about winning or not,” she said.
Moments like these highlight what makes Profesora Cilona so special. She’s not just an exceptional teacher, she’s someone who brings joy, humor, and authenticity into every space she’s in. Winning Teacher of the Year is a well-deserved recognition of the impact she’s had on Mercy’s community.
