Varsity Volleyball ends incredible season

The varsity volleyball season ended at the state quarterfinals on Nov. 18, when the team lost to Romeo in a high-strung fourth game.  After Romeo took the first two games, Mercy bounced back with a win in the third game, and a strong lead in the fourth.  Unfortunately, the Marlins couldn’t keep their lead and lost in the fourth game with a score of 21-25.

“You don’t often see high school teams with several players… near 6-feet-tall,” said senior Jenna Lerg.  “Being a predominantly defensive team, it was difficult to match their caliber of offense.”

The Marlins weren’t the only team to be taken down in the state playoffs by Romeo.  Bedford and Novi lost to Romeo in the semi-finals and final game, giving Romeo its first state championship in any sport for their school.

Despite the loss, MVV’s season was impressive, with a record of 53-7-2 and both a district and regional championship.

“I would not have wanted this season to turn out any other way,” said senior Kayla Fisher.  “I am so proud of what we have accomplished this year, and I couldn’t have asked for a better group of girls to compete with.”

MVV attributes much of their success to their fans, affectionately labeled the ‘fish tank’, who showed up in theme wear for nearly every game of the season.

“My favorite game was against Seaholm,” said junior Bella McDonald.  “Our student section made the game 120% more exciting.”

Overall the Marlins fought hard for a remarkable season and were proud of their accomplishments. They left the league anything but empty handed.

“When a team like MVV, with incomparable chemistry, steps on the court, there is no stopping them,” said Lerg.  “We used our charisma, want for success, and raw talent to become one of the best teams in the state.”
