The Mercy Varsity Figure Skating team (MVFS) took the ice for their first practice Friday, November 8th. Renewed and regenerated, the skaters arrived at the rink at 5:45 a.m., only to be greeted by the cruel and piecing chill of ‘B’ rink.

The figure skating team consists of three levels of competitors: A, B and C, which range in skill set from highest to lowest respectively. The competitions are spilt into three categories which include jumps, moves in the field and spins. Each competition has a unique set of requirements that the skaters must perform. The coach assigns a skater to a specific element for each competition.

During the weeks of their preparation, competitors focus on their assignments in order to perform them to the best of their ability at the upcoming competition. In the 2013-2014 season, MVFS will participate in three competitions and hopes to qualify for the state championships on March 23.
