The Mercy Varsity field hockey team closed their season on Tuesday night. The team lost 2-0 against Ann Arbor Pioneer in the State Quarter-Finals. They advanced into the second round of States after defeating Ann Arbor Skyline 2-1 on Saturday, October 20th. In regular season rankings, Pioneer was ranked first while Mercy was ninth.
Pioneer went on to win the State Championship on Saturday. They defeated a fellow Ann Arbor team, Huron High School, in a penalty shootout after a deadlock of 0-0.
Though it ended in tears, the team had an overall successful season. Mercy was crowned Catholic League Champions for the first time since 2004. It was also Mercy’s first year in Division 1 after last year’s team won the Division 2 title, so they battled against the toughest teams in Michigan.
The varsity team will lose 11 seniors this year. At the banquet on Sunday, juniors Dana DeFrain, Sarah Hoffman, and Lindsay Hiser were named captains for next year.
