“Buy”, “sell” and “days off” are the words that filled Mercy halls after the March 20 Sweepstakes assembly. The Mercy sweepstakes drive kicked off with the annual assembly featuring the popular class videos, made to ignite the competitive spirit within Mercy students. With each student given seven books to sell, the class with the most books sold earns a day off, and if the school reaches the set goals, then the entire student body receives days off. Selling sweepstakes tickets gives a Mercy student a chance to have her name drawn in the school raffle, and possibly the opportunity to earn herself a prize.

The videos made by the members of the student council were a hit with Mercy students.

“My favorite part of the assembly was the videos that each grade made,” said junior Sarah Yugovich. “ I thought they were really funny and creative.”

The senior video took on the theme of the ABC show The Bachelor. One girl represented the bachelor and the other three were contestants on the show, each from a different class. In the end the senior contestant won the bachelor’s rose, signaling the idea that seniors will win sweepstakes.

“I want the senior class to win,” said senior Mary Abbo, “ and I know they will win.”

The junior video took on the theme of the Amazing Race. It involved several students, each of a different class conducting various activities in a race to see who would make it to the end. Undoubtedly, the juniors  won, proving that the they are willing the run the extra mile if it means winning that day off.

The sophomore video consisted of an America’s Next Top Model theme. In the beginning there were four contestants fighting to be America’s next top Model, but as the competition heated up, the contestants got serious and one by one they left until only two remained. The final challenge of the 80’s Runway Walk, led the sophomores to victory, after the senior slipped on the floor and lost the approval of the judges.

Last, but by no means least, the fresh women had the theme of Fear Factor. With a student from each class participating in numerous fearful tasks, it did not take long for the competition to dwindle down. With the mere mention of the word “fire”, the junior candidate decided she could no longer go on with the show and left. As the competition edged on the task only got more gruesome, leading to the elimination of the sophomores. The final round, between the seniors and the freshwomen, ended with a frosh victory.
