ACT’s are quite possibly the biggest determining factor in your college planning. Students often take the test multiple times in hopes of getting the perfect score, and the stress of studying can be overwhelming.

Everyone has different methods for success on these tests. Some try to cram the night before, skimming through prep books and praying for a good score, while others study months in advance, hiring private tutors and taking special classes.

Studying techniques depend on each individual person. Some find that studying for hours does not increase their score and choose to go into the test relying solely on their previous knowledge.

“I don’t think you can really prepare yourself for standardized testing, but its good to review here and there,” said junior Karrah Wanagat. “The ACT prep books are kind of boring, so I don’t really do them.”

Natalie Bozimowski has a different method. “To study I go to a tutor and learn new test taking methods on how to complete the different sections faster and without stress.”

Mercy even offers standardized testing classes starting in January to help girls achieve higher scores. Classes are also available at local colleges and through private tutors. It is, however, all a matter of how much you are willing to pay, as private classes and multiple prep books can add up.

While it may be challenging, most students figure out an effective method for studying and preparing for standardized test’s thats right for them.

Other ideas for effective studying include taking online quizzes through the CollegeBoard website, which offers many free testing opportunities. You can also purchase ACT flash cards through Kaplan or other companies. These flash cards usually cover math, English, and science topics, and provide a thorough review of the main topics featured on the ACT.

If you have to try many different techniques to study, do not get discouraged. You will surely find a way to study that works for you to help you succeed on standardized tests.
