Therapy can come in many shapes and sizes, but for Mercy girls on December 13th and 15th, it comes as therapy dogs. Mission and Ministry sponsors the special service of providing therapy dogs for students in the lobby. The goal is to provide students comfort and companionship, even if it’s only for a small time during the school day.

Mission and ministry director, Mrs. Mary Kate Becker plans this event and encourages Mercy girls to see for themselves the benefits it can bring during this busy time.

“There’s just so much happening right now and it’s such a busy time in your guys’ life,” Becker said.

She explains that therapy dogs have been a new tradition at Mercy in recent years. It has received lots of positive reviews from students, so she continues to bring in the dogs.

“We particularly chose this week for therapy dogs to come because I know the week before finals is more hectic,” Becker said. “They are just there as an option for students to come, de-stress and be around a furry friend.”

There were three golden retrievers in the lobby on Wednesday. Each one had a different name and story, as well as a friendly owner that would inform students about the dogs.

“Our office sponsors this because it embodies the Care for Creation right, and the concern of the earth and all of God’s creatures, which are Mercy critical concerns. Also, St. Francis of Assisi had a particular devotion for creation, not just humans,” Becker said.

She explains that having compassion for all animals is carrying on God’s love, because he created every creature with a unique purpose.

Having a furry companion, even if it is just for a few minutes, can reduce lots of stress and anxiety you may have in this busy time before the end of the first semester and exams. Be sure to stop by the lobby this Friday to see the therapy dogs!
