The year was 2016 and the slogan “Make America Great Again” became fresh in the nation’s mind. Since then it was stamped on hats, flags, and consistently tweeted by President Trump,. Now, in preparation of the coming 2020 presidential election, a new slogan has taken root: “Keep America Great”. The slogan has been adjusted, but not by much.

So, what did President Trump do to actually make America great? For starters, the economy. The economy grew at a 3.2 percent rate in the first quarter of 2019, according to The New York Post, and a CNN poll showed 56 percent of Americans consider Trump to be doing a good job on the economy. According to Fox News, 157 million people are employed, more than any other time in our nation’s history and employers are still looking to fill 6.9 million job openings. Also, veteran unemployment is at its lowest since 2000, women unemployment hit a 65-year low, and teenager unemployment (ages 16-19) hit a 50-year low.

Next is bipartisan agreement. Although it seems like there hasn’t been very much of it lately, President Trump did manage to work with Democrats and Republicans to pass important legislation. According to The Washington Post, Trump got various things done on a bipartisan level, including criminal justice reform, opioid and sex trafficking legislation, and a new “Right to Try” law giving dying Americans access to experimental medications.

However, things seem to get tricky when it comes to the issue of immigration. This has been an ongoing issue that has divided the nation between Republicans and Democrats since the beginning of President Trump’s term. He began cracking down on the issue once he took office, as it was one of his campaign promises. More than 256,000 illegal immigrants were arrested in 2018, according to The Washington Post.

Also, one of his campaign promises was the border wall along the southern border of the United States. There have been parts of the wall that are said to be under construction, but officials point out that this work is merely repairing existing fencing. According to Politico.com, on May 10, 2019, Trump’s administration was set to receive $1.5 billion in Pentagon funds for the wall and there is enough money on contract to build 256 miles of border wall. So while it may seem like he has at least started to deliver on his promise of building the wall, but there definitely have been struggles. For example, President Trump shut the government down to try to get funding for the wall. The shutdown that began on December 22, 2018 and lasted until January 25, 2019 was the longest shutdown in U.S. history and in the end, Congress still said no to the idea of funding a wall.

Some take the stance that the wall is highly immoral while others believe it is best for the country and will decrease the amount of illegal aliens. As the days pass and the November 2020 election draws closer, the question remains: will President Trump’s new slogan lead him into a second term or will a Democratic candidate defeat him?
