Mercy Varsity Dance team starts season with a bang
The Mercy Varsity Dance team (MVD) competed in the High Kick dance competition on Nov. 2. It was the team’s first competition of the season.
“We have been working really hard at practices, so it felt great to finally compete,” says senior MVD leader Danielle McDonald.
The team competed against seven other schools in the varsity hip hop category of the competition. MVD danced to a mashup of “Formation” by Beyonce, “Money Longer” by Lil Uzi Vert, and “All the Way Up” by Fat Joe and Remy Ma. The dance featured ripples, popping, and intense line changes, and the team ended up placing third in their category.
“This was our first competition of the year which means that everyone was very excited, but nerves were also pretty high, too,” says senior Kate O’Sullivan, who is one of the leaders of the team this year, along with the other senior team members.
In addition to competing, MVD will be performing at all of the home games for the varsity basketball team. The dance team will serve as the halftime entertainment at the games by performing their energizing routines. Their first performance will be on Nov. 30 at Mercy.
So far this season, the team has learned three different routines.
“I am particularly excited about Catholic Leagues this year,” says O’Sullivan. “Last year, we were the runner up, but I really think this year we can step it up as a team and win.”
