Mercy Varsity Golf (MVG) will be heading to states due to a successful regional tournament on Oct. 8 at Twin Lakes Golf Club. Out of 15 teams, MVG placed third, securing the very last spot in the state tournament on Oct. 16 and 17 at the Meadows Golf Course.

“I think regionals really boosted our confidence for states and put us in a good position going into [the tournament,]” said senior captain Julia Shaw.

MVG had some very tough competition going into regionals. Going up against strong teams such as Troy and Bloomfield Hills was not an easy task for MVG. Troy finished out on top at the regional tournament with a combined team total of 309, Bloomfield Hills came in second with 327, and MVG finished with 329.

Shaw had MVG’s lowest– and best– score of 75. This was the fourth lowest score in the whole tournament, an impressive feat. Other MVG scores included freshman Mia Sooch’s 83, senior Lilly Blake’s 84, junior Marissa Lobbia’s 87, and Sophie VanderWheele’s 94.

Although the team had an impressive finish at the regional tournament, MVG is not taking that success for granted. In fact, the team is preparing thoroughly for the approaching state tournament throughout this week.

“We have to practice every day this week,” said Shaw. “It’s very important to practice in this weather to get us ready for [the state tournament on] Friday and Saturday.”

Shaw and the rest of team have high expectations for states and want to have a strong finish to their successful and fun season.
