MVT cruises to states
Mercy Varsity Tennis (MVT) crushed the competition in the regional tournament May 15 and advances to the state tournament in Midland on May 29.
MVT won an impressive 5 of 8 flights in regionals, winning the regional tournament by a significant amount of points. The team hopes this success will follow it to states. Although finals week is approaching, MVT continues a rigorous practice schedule in preparation for states.
“Sometimes it’s hard to balance school and tennis,” said freshman Abby Bush. “I’m happy we’re getting practice in [before states], but I’m also stressed about finals.”
Sophomore Emily McCann is also concerned about finals, but agrees that practice is important if the team wants to perform.
“The teams at states are really good,” said McCann. “We have have to have lots of energy if we want to win matches.”
McCann is correct about going up against tough teams. MVT will be up against top-notch teams such as Clarkston, Northville, and Grosse Pointe South.
The state tournament is not all about the tennis, though. Since the tournament requires a stay in a hotel, the team has an opportunity to bond by sleeping in the same rooms and attending team dinners.
“The team this year is really close,” said junior captain Kathryn Dunleavy. “I’m excited to become even closer and have a really good weekend [at states.]”
