Mercy Varsity Tennis (MVT) swept doubles and tied Bloomfield Hills Academy of the Sacred Heart in their match on April 28 at Catholic Central. MVT will face Academy of the Sacred Heart soon in the upcoming Catholic League Championship.

Freshman Abby Bush is proud of MVT’s finish against Academy of the Sacred Heart, where she attended middle school.

“It was weird but fun to play against my old friends,” said Bush. “I’m really happy I was able to get a win against them.”

Although the doubles clinched a win in every flight, the singles struggled to do the same and lost all four flights. Freshman Kristin Jackson and sophomore Carly Demkowicz, however, both had close three-set singles matches.

Overall, this was a positive finish for MVT, considering the team is still adjusting to the new lineup coach Joe Stafford recently set for the rest of the season. Stafford feels this new lineup is the best way of guaranteeing a successful MVT season and, hopefully, a good run at the state tournament.

Senior Kaela Brown was one of the team members affected by the lineup change. Brown was recently moved from a doubles position to a singles position.

“Singles is a lot of fun,” said Brown. “I didn’t expect to be put in singles, though, so it’s a lot more exercise than I was prepared for.”

Although Brown is enjoying her spot at singles, she sometimes misses doubles.

“It’s nice not having to rely on a partner but I definitely miss having that extra person on the court with me,” said Brown.

Members of MVT will continue to adjust to the new lineup as they prepare for the Holly Invitational tournament this weekend.
