Yesterday, Tuesday February 27, United States Attorney Dawn Ison who is the chief federal law enforcement officer for Eastern Michigan hosted a “Listening session” for Mercy students. The session took place during 2nd hour and students were able to come and learn about Ison, but also share experiences of their own. Ison opened the session with an introduction to her responsibilities as a U.S. Attorney. Serving 6.5 million eastern Michiganders across 34 counties, Ison works within the community to reduce crime by focusing on data, not demographics. Ison has traveled across the district to visit with high school students who can express their concerns within their community with her-. The goal of these sessions is to help bridge the gap between the people she serves by sitting down, learning and listening to the people she serves. Ison took the time to walk around the room and greet each student individually. Some topics discussed were safety within schools, mental health, segregation in an educational environment and curriculum. Ison listened to each concern in hopes of improving the well being of the community. This event was very beneficial for the Mercy community and they hope to hold more events like it in the future.
