The often uncomfortable, but hilariously funny comedy Awkward returns to MTV for its fourth season, which looks to be the most dramatic yet.
Need a quick recap?
Three boys, three seasons.
There’s Team Matty, Team Jake, and Team Collin. These three completely different boys that Jenna falls madly in-like with cause her more headaches than a take-home test from Mr. Gruber.
As if freshman year isn’t tough enough, teenager Jenna Hamilton becomes popular after her clumsiness causes people to think she attempted suicide in her bathroom. Instead of the “under-the-radar” look Hamilton was going for, she is now the talk of the school.
Freshman year also brings Hamilton to deal with her crush on the most popular guy in school, mean girl Sadie Saxton whose response is a snotty “you’re welcome” to everything, an “in-your-face” guidance counselor that should be receiving guidance rather than giving it, and even more guy drama involving the adorable Jake Rosati.
Season one details the secretive summer rendezvous between Hamilton and the most popular guy at school, Matty McKibben. However, when school comes around, Matty ignores Jenna, prompting her to pursue a relationship with his best friend, Jake. Jake and Jenna go to the Winter Formal together and Matty sees them together. Without letting Jake know, Jenna and Matty agree to give their relationship another shot. However, Jenna chooses Jake and they become official.
Season Two and sophomore year come around and Hamilton has finally gotten her life together, somewhat. This season is a little calmer than the first season because everything falls into place. Although Jenna and Matty talked about giving their relationship another shot, Jenna chooses Jake and they become official. Jenna and Jake are the perfect couple until Jenna’s friend, red-headed Tamra, is caught being closer than just friends with Jake. Surprisingly, Jenna has no hard feelings about this because her crush on Matty never went away.
In Season 3, Jenna and her friends begin junior year. All of her friends vacationed in Europe and Jenna feels distance from everyone. The mean girl, Sade Saxton, is usually mean this year, but it turns out that her family lost their wealth and her parents are split. Jenna has some body issues she has to deal with. However, all these minor events are overshadowed by the death, and supposed murder, of Ricky Schwartz. Jenna and Marry are the happy couple around school—until Collin comes into the picture. Collin is a mysterious, handsome poet in Jenna’s advanced English class. There are hints of flirtation between them and the chemistry comes to a head when they kiss in Collin’s car as Matty walks out to the driveway.
The question that left all Awkward fans jaw-dropped and gripping their chairs: “Did Matty see the kiss?” will be answered.
“I’m Team Matty,” said Junior Morgan Pfaff. “Awkward is my favorite show and I’m happy it comes back this month. I hope Jenna chooses Matty.”
