MVG wraps up season
Mercy Varsity Golf (MVG) ended their season on strong, positive note with a sixth place finish at the Division 1 MHSAA State Finals at Bedford Valley Golf Course on Oct. 17 and 18.
On the first day, the team’s score was 346. MVG improved by two strokes on the second day of tournament, totaling a score of 690.
Head Coach Ms. Vicky Kowalski was very happy with the team’s score.
“Last year we didn’t even qualify for states,” said Ms. Kowalski. “We shot our regular scores. The girls were really steady and handled the cold weather well.”
Only a select few girls on MVG got the opportunity to compete in the state tournament. These girls included seniors Erica Heath, Caroline Bland, and Amy Vlachos, as well as juniors Lilly Blake, Kendyl Kirkland, and Julia Shaw.
Captain Heath earned MVG’s lowest score of 84 on the first day and 83 on the second day, for a two day total of 167. Shaw closely followed with an 85 on both days for a total of 170.
Overall, East Kentwood High School snatched first place with a two day combined total of 643. Trailing close behind were Lake Orion, Dearborn, Novi, and Davison High School.
Although MVG didn’t come out on top at the state tournament, the highlight of their season was their back-to-back Catholic League Championship win on Oct. 6. Erica Heath won the tournament and became the Catholic League Champion with a 74.
MVG will officially end their season with a team banquet on Oct. 30.
