At first the idea of writing a sports article about the Detroit Lions was comical but after seeing a Facebook newsfeed full of boys praising their draft it seemed like something worth looking into.
Detroit football fans seem to be most excited about picking up the best player on the “board,” Nick Fairley. The 23 year old Alabama native was drafted by the Lions during the first round of the 2011 National Football League draft.
ESPN writer, Jeffri Chadiha, along with countless other sports fans believe that pairing Fairley with NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, Ndamukong Suh has a solid defensive line. It was this decision that put this draft pick at the top of Chadiha’s list of best choices.
The team’s general mananger, Martin Mayhew, was disappointed they were only able to add five new team members. They went into the draft with six picks but gave one up to gain running back, Mikel Leshoure.
John Matheos, a columnist for The Bleacher Report, thinks that with such a successful draft the Lions may be playoff bound this upcoming season.
“The Lions are on the rise. Playoffs are the next step. The city of Detroit deserves it. If everything goes as planned, I see the Lions being a dominant force in the years to come,” writes Matheos.
