The anticipation of who will lead the Class of 2028 has been building since Mercy first opened its doors for the school year. Soon, the 5 elected officers will start their terms. But first, 9th grade elections will be held in order for the freshman to choose their representatives.
On Tuesday September 10th, class meetings for all grades will be conducted. At this time, 9th graders will elect their class officers. Out of 12 in the running, only 5 will win. These chosen class officers will take part in an extremely important role in Mercy Student Government. From planning spirit week to their class fundraiser, class officers take input from their grade and use it to make Mercy better.
“When I got to Mercy I felt very welcomed and included so I wanted to help build on that so everyone else can feel it too,” Cameron Sanders said. She is a candidate for freshman class officer.
”I want everyone to be heard and for their opinions to be considered,” Sanders said.
“I want to be in politics when I’m older so I figured being an officer for my class would be helpful,” freshman representative Audrey Jiddou said.
“Mercy student government is important because it allows for students to have their peers speak for them. Also there is collaboration between the grades,” Jiddou said.
As the polls open and close next week, Mercy Student Government will welcome their new class of student leaders.
Mercy’s Executive Board chair, Jada Roberts, is excited for the new candidates.
“I’m so proud of all of them for putting themselves out there and I love that they are participating in student government because it is crucial for Mercy. I am supporting Sona Cranson, Grace Bedner, and Rachael Ramjattan in particular,” Roberts said.
”I know some of them from Pom and some from my Link crew and their campaigning has been super cute. I will support all of the freshman candidates because I know how hard this process was,” Roberts said.
The candidates have so much courage to open themselves up for the whole grade, so early in their Mercy careers. Another exciting part of the new school year is on the horizon and Mercy is bound to see positive changes!
