The musical that tapped its way into our hearts: 42nd Street

A love triangle, a blossoming romance, and a murder! What more could you ask for in a musical? Mercy High School’s theatre department tapped its way into our hearts this month with their rendition of the classic 42nd Street, a show so spectacular, the audience’s attention was caught even before the curtain opened.

42nd Street follows the cast of Broadway’s newest musical comedy, Pretty Lady, from casting call to opening night. Peggy Sawyer, played by junior Cara Forfinski, just misses auditions and the director of the show, Julian Marsh, played by senior Jonathan Stecevic from Aim High School, has no patience for latecomers. However, as they cast one too few chorus members, Julian allows Peggy to join the show.

Pretty Lady’s leading lady Dorothy Brock, played by sophomore Kylie Krucher, breaks her leg the night of the premiere, forcing Julian to cast Peggy as the new lead.

With musical numbers such as “Shuffle Off to Buffalo”, “Young and Healthy”, and of course “42nd Street”, the audience’s attention was held throughout the show.
