When A-Clubs met this Monday after a 1:40 dismissal, the Just Peace club had an interesting and enlightening discussion about stereotypes, how they are perpetuated by the media, and the role they have in society.
The meeting began when a Just Peace leader, senior Isabelle Larson, asked everyone to write down the stereotypes that they thought of when a certain race, ethnicity, religion, or subculture was mentioned and what type of media reinforced this stereotype.
After the activity, the club discussed the implications of all these stereotypes and ways that they could work to overcome them. They also discussed the stereotypes at Mercy, and how they affect the school.
“I learned that people are conditioned to think a stereotype, even if they don’t believe it,” said junior Megan Bowers.
