Every year, Mercy’s La Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica fundraiser raises money for individuals in need. This year, the money raised will be sent to people living in the Andes Mountains which are located in Ecuador.
“The other officers and myself picked this fundraiser because we wanted to directly help indigenous people in a Spanish speaking country,” senior and SHH leader Carly Dalloo said. “By donating an alpaca we can positively impact the lives of farming families in Ecuador’s Andean highlands.”
In order to raise the money, they are selling an assortment of candies and stickers featuring alpacas. They hoped that this would generate interest to the students and would help them raise the money. A singular alpaca is not cheap, therefore, they are hoping to raise enough money to at least purchase one.
“Each alpaca costs $360 to donate. We are hoping to raise enough money to donate at least one alpaca, but of course, we would love to donate as many as possible,” Dalloo said.
Alpacas are very important to the people living in the Andes Mountains. They provide nourishment and resources to the people. There are countless ways that the alpacas can benefit the community.
“Alpacas produce 10 pounds of wool annually which can be used to knit hats, scarves, gloves, blankets and other items to protect against harsh weather,” Dalloo said.
Therefore, you should stop by the South Alcove and purchase their products to make a difference in the lives of families in the Andes Mountain.
