Arthurian legend, though a source of fascination for hundreds of years, has a relatively minimal storyline. And, though most people will recognize the word Camelot or its king, Arthur, they may not know the other characters of that fabled land so well. The BBC’s Merlin focuses specifically on the title character (played by Colin Morgan) and his developing relationships with the other people of Camelot that are so crucial to the centuries-old legend. Merlin’s tale, in this version, starts when he ends up as the personal servant of Prince Arthur Pendragon (portrayed by Bradley James). Since the use of magic is strictly outlawed and punishable by death, Merlin is forced to hide his abilities and avoid both King Uther’s and Prince Arthur’s detection. And, though he begins as a reluctant servant, the relationship between the two grows into loyal friendship. Also in the castle are the Lady Morgana (Katie McGrath), who has grown up with Arthur as the king’s ward, and her maidservant Guinevere (Angel Coulby). The show, whose first three seasons are currently available on DVD, explores the challenges faced by the wizard and future king who share the same impressive destiny and the relationships with those who are intertwined with it.
