“The show where everything’s made up and the points don’t matter” may be off the air now, but remains very much a cult classic. The Americanized improvisation show was, simply, the stage for a cast—many of whom starred in the British original—and all the antics of actors without script facing a live studio audience.

A series of games calling for ample improve and, often, suggestions from the audience summarizes the plot of this half hour show and leaves promise of sincere laughs. Colin Mochrie, Ryan Stiles, and Wayne Brady are the most frequent contestants in every game show-like episode, though an open fourth spot allows for rotation.

Greg Proops, Brad Sherwood, and Chip Esten serve as semi-regulars, and celebrities like Robin Williams, Whoopi Goldberg, and Stephen Colbert can be caught in a few episodes. Drew Carey, who can give out points for everything or nothing, hosts, but is not bound to that role.

All of the cast members have since dabbled in other improv and comedy shows, often together, but since Whose Line’s cancellation, television has seriously been lacking a proper setting for the whole group. However, because of the show’s persevering fandom, Drew Carey has created a new, but almost identical, Improv-a-Ganza, which premieres April 11 at 8:30 PM on GSN.
