In the middle of the Sophomore Semiformal dance, the sweaty Mercy Varsity basketball team suddenly flooded the gymnasium, hollering and holding up their newly earned District Champions trophy. In a 46-24 victory over Farmington Hills Harrison at Farmington, the Marlins managed to capture their fourth district title in the last six seasons and to get every player into the game.
High scores came from Candice Leatherwood with ten points, Elena Vlachos with eight points, and Abbey Lovat and Lauren Reinhold with seven points each. Sam Bauer followed with six points, Sarah Benson added four points, and Janelle McQueen and Katie Lee each scored two points.
“The bench played a big role in the game,” said head coach Gary Morris. Because of the Marlins’ solid lead, sophomores Jamie Jeffries and Gillian Hickey, brought up from the JV team, were both able to see some playing time.
This big win sent the team to regional play with a record of 17-5. Hosted at Canton High School, the first round of regionals pits Mercy against Hartland on Tuesday, March 8 at 5:30 p.m. Students attending this game are asked to wear their maroon spirit shirts.
When the team rushed through the gym doors after a bus ride back from their victory, they were greeted with cheers from Mercy girls and their dates alike. The team looks forward to seeing this Mercy spirit at their regional play games.
