Mercy’s Model United Nations (MUN) club hosted the first conference of the season on Oct. 12-13. Over 40 students from Mercy, Brother Rice, Marian, and U of D attended the two-day competition, which featured three different committees.

MUN is a unique club that showcases a student’s debate skills in an competitive setting. Each student chooses a nation to research and represent, then debates various topics from the point of view of that nation.  Topics range from humanitarian aid to military strikes, all depending on the focus of the committee.

MerMUN, as Mercy’s simulation is affectionately known, presented the Social and Humanitarian Council (SOCHUM), the World Health Organization, and the Security Council.  While these councils may sound somewhat boring, each council spiced its topics up in a unique way.

Delegates from the World Health Organization were infected with a “zombie-virus” and required to prepare the world for the coming-zombie apocalypse.  Meanwhile, the Security Council was forced to deal with the threat of World War 3 and a delegate’s imaginary daughter was kidnapped in SOCHUM.

While there are only two local simulations left, the fun is hardly over. Mercy’s team will compete at a national simulation at the University of Michigan in January. Later they will travel to Washington D.C. for the International Conference at Georgetown University.
