Groans were heard throughout the hallways as students were introduced to their own Extreme Makeover: Spirit Week edition.
No more Field Day. New class colors. A day dedicated solely to serving others. With many eye rolls and sighs, many students said they were not fully on board with the revamped Spirit Week.
“It was annoying because this is what we look forward to throughout our years at Mercy and having it taken away so abruptly was upsetting, especially with it being my senior year,” said senior Natalie Lewandowski.
However, it did not take long for students to warm up to the new ideas, and to embrace the numerous adjustments. Students enjoyed a break from their habitual school schedule and took part in a Mercy Make a Difference day on Wednesday, where they went out into the community to help the less fortunate.
“I thought it was fun that we were able to help the community and still be with our friends,” said sophomore Erin Tisdel.
Tisdel then went on to say that she was not particularly open to the new changes in the beginning, yet the week’s fun activities and themes have her excited and positive for future Spirit Weeks. New activities such as karaoke in the cafe, alcove decorating, and finding the Mercy marlin were a huge hit.
“I absolutely loved the karaoke!” gushed junior Skylar Tisko. “It gave a twist to Spirit Week and it was a fun to sing all day long.”
Many Mercy staff and students worked tirelessly to bring about these new modifications. It seems their hard work has paid off and that the new changes have resonated well with the student body.
