As a high school student, it’s unlikely that your day starts with sipping a relaxing cup of Joe and thumbing through the daily newspaper. Though coffee is most likely a staple in your daily routine, most teens seem to place their daily intake of news on one of the lower shelves of priority in their lives.
One of the reasons news is often ignored is simply because teens don’t have the time. When running from soccer to a Spanish Honors Society banquet, the last place a Mercy girl’s mind would wander would be to her curiosity on the latest updates in foreign markets. With the pace of lives that Mercy students expect out of themselves, sometimes there just isn’t time for outside reading.
Hard newspapers are also less accessible today than they were even five years ago. When daily newspapers stopped delivering to front doors, the world of news changed. One must now go out of their way to find a hard copy of their daily information. This is not to say, however, that the news is lacking. Now, if a student opened a new tab and searched “today’s news,” a plethora of information would stream before their eyes, almost overwhelming them. And Mercy girls definitely know how to work the Internet.
The problem is simply the connection between students and the sources. Get out there. Go read. Have a little fun, relax, and take a half hour to explore the world that is around you.
