On Tuesday, April 24, Mercy’s Tri-M Music Honor Society hosted its first open-mic coffeehouse. The evening was filled with various acts, ranging from music to poetry. Students performed many different songs, including “The Way I Am” by Ingrid Michaelson, “The A-Team” by Ed Sheeran and “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz. Some sang a capella, while others were accompanied by instrumentals, piano, and guitar. Several students recited poetry, some even having written the poem themselves.
After nearly 20 performances in 2 hours, the coffeehouse ended with all Mercy seniors present singing “Hey Now” from the Lizzie McGuire Movie.
In addition to the music and poetry performances, the coffeehouse helped raise money for a good cause. Donations were collected to help save the Detroit Opera House, which will close its doors on May 31 if the goal of $11 million is not met.
