Students and staff at Mercy High School joined together In March to honor the 17 lives lost at Florida’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Students commemorated the lives lost in a shooting on Feb. 14 by joining together in a prayer service. After the service, students and staff had the choice to walk outside together and recognize each of the victims. This ceremony was also a call to action for students advocating safe and non-violent schools. Many in the Mercy community wore orange shirts as a symbol of human life. The students who organized this event wore t-shirts that said “Prayer, Peace, Action, Parkland.” They talked about who the victims were individually and then placed a flower at the Peace Pole in memory of each of them. When students returned to their adviser groups, they each received a sticker with the message #DoNotLetUp. This hashtag was created by English teacher Mr. Steve Morgan as reminder to remember to always stand up for what is right and never let up in the relentless pursuit of justice.
