Things longer than Kim Kardashian’s marriage: summer vacation, a semester in school, the time it takes for a baby to learn to crawl and the line in the cafeteria during Kickin’ Chicken days (or so it seems). After a grueling 72 days of marriage, Kardashian has filed for divorce from Kris Humphries, who plays basketball for the New Jersey Nets.
In a world where teen sensations Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez can carry on a relationship longer than two mature adults, there seems to be something wrong. How can an (almost) 18-year old boy and a 19-year old girl remain together through all the ups-and-downs a relationship entails longer than this grown couple? People will argue that Gomez and Bieber are simply dating while Kardashian and Humphries were married and these two relationships involve different aspects.
But, that’s exactly it. Kardashian and Humphries were married. They made a promise to one another and to God that they would stick together through good times and bad, in sickness and in health, till death do them part. So why is it, that after a mere 72 days, they are ready to forget about the covenant they have entered into and throw it away like it never happened? Could it be Kardashian’s attempt to cash in on the media frenzy, or Humphries effort to rise to stardom through his wife (although, her stardom itself still perplexes me, but I digress)? Whatever it is, one thing has the media quite upset: the mockery the couple has made of the sacrament of marriage. These two were supposed to enter into a life-long commitment to one another, and it seems by their quickie marriage and divorce, they have pulled a fast one on us. They’ve turned marriage into something disposable; if used properly, it could get what you what you need and still dispose of it with no strings attached.
It’s not only Kardashian who seems to be using marriage as a publicity boost. Other celebrities have been married and divorced so quickly, it seems that fans forget it has even happened. Take, for example, former Saved by the Bell star Mario Lopez, who married actress Ali Landry in early 2004. Fifteen days later the couple had their marriage annulled. And what about pop-star Britney Spears? She married childhood friend Jason Alexander for fifty-five hours (hours, not days) before the couple quickly annulled their marriage. These people are supposed to be role models, but they are not setting the right example for what a marriage should be.
And that’s not saying divorce is something completely and totally out of the question. But when Kardashian cites “irreconcilable differences” on her divorce papers, questions are raised. How can your differences be irreconcilable? Have you even had time to try to reconcile them? She seems so quick to trash her marriage and move forward with her life, that it’s hard to relate. Whatever the reason may be, these celebrities need to take a step back and see the effect they are having on society’s view of relationships.
