This year’s Model United Nations (MUN) season is coming to an end on Dec. 4. The last local simulation of the year will be at University of Detroit Jesuit (U of D). The delegates will end the season with a total of three simulations, one at Mercy, another at Brother Rice, and lastly at U of D.

After a highly successful season, with multiple awards won by girls of various grade levels, it is a bittersweet end. Seniors Carmela Sleva and Lucy Devine have both received Major awards, junior Claire Johnston received a Verbal award, and the freshmen also performed very well, according to the team’s captains, Sleva and Devine.

“What made this year special was that we had a really great fundraiser,” said Sleva.

This year, MUN sold Halloweenagrams, allowing students to purchase candy and send it to a friend on Halloween along with a note.

“It was highly successful and we had a great turnout,” said Sleva.

Now, as the regular season comes to a close, the delegates can look forward to and prepare for the 53rd annual North American Invitational Model United Nations (NAIMUN) in February. Every year, around eight Mercy students travel to Washington, D.C. to participate in various simulations for national recognition, competing against thousands of students from high schools across the nation.

Although it is not yet known which members will be going to NAIMUN, winning awards increases one’s chance of earning a spot.

“I’m really excited for NAIMUN,” said senior Kara Wallace. “It’s the best part of the season.”
