There are certain skills one should have going into the workforce that are crucial including good communication, computer, and financial skills. Business Professionals of America (BPA) is attractive to students because it helps young people practice all of these skills and more.

BPA covers a vast spectrum of careers ranging from business management to video production. Members have the opportunity to meet and collaborate with hundreds of students from across the country who are interested in an array of careers.

“I enjoy wearing the business attire,” said junior Asha McElroy, “and being in an environment with other future business professionals.”

The three BPA conferences that take place each year are opportunities for networking and learning new concepts. At each conference, students can attend seminars and compete in their business events as well as engage in fun activities like dances, photo booths, and dinners. Conferences include the Regional Conference in January, State Conference in March, and the National Conference in May.

“What I enjoy most [about the conferences is] how we get to compete against other schools,” said junior Brandi Gulla. “BPA conferences have helped my networking skills because [they] help me to associate with lots of [people] I didn’t know.”

This year, over 10 Mercy BPA members attended the State Conference and performed exceptionally in their events. While no Mercy students advanced to the National Conference, many are motivated to improve next year.

“BPA has helped me prepare to become an entrepreneur, to own my own business and one day be my own boss,” said McElroy.
