Senior Miriam MacLachan is an aspiring artist.  She has taken an art class at Mercy every year since she entered as a sophomore.  Those classes, coupled with her natural ability, have matured her into a very talented artist.  Most people know MacLachan as the long-haired ginger who wears her gray, uniform skirt slightly different than the rest of her peers. However, many do not know her passion.

NP: What inspired you to be interested in art?

MM: Ever since I was little it’s always been something that I’ve done.  It’s grown with me and it’s a part of me.  I can’t imagine going a day without thinking about art because it’s all around me.

NP: Why is art important to you?

MM: It’s a way to express myself.  It’s different from other activities because you are not judged on it.  You can’t be good at art or bad at it because art is what you make it.  So many times I am stressed to meet other people’s expectations, but when I am drawing or painting the only expectations I have to meet are my own.

NP: How do you plan on using art in your future as a career?

MM: I plan on going into some type of design area, either interior design or graphic design.  In those areas I can make money and do what I love.  I would still paint and draw at home.

NP: What’s your favorite place to draw or paint?

MM: My favorite place would be the art studio in my basement.  It’s not really a professional studio.  I just set up tables and put all my art supplies down there.  I also have an easel that I do most of my work on.  In my studio no one can tell me what’s right or what’s wrong.
