Hey, Hey, Hockeytown

With all the hype surrounding the Tigers’ postseason and the Lions’ hot start to the season, it’s easy for Detroit sports fans to forget about the Red Wings. The Wings can be considered Detroit’s most successful sports team, and their history of winning shows why. The Wings have 11 Stanley Cups to their name and have made the Stanley Cup Playoffs for 20 consecutive years, the longest active streak in all professional sports.

So it comes as no surprise that the Red Wings are off to another great start in the 2011-2012 NHL season. Although the team has only played four games to date, they are undefeated (4-0-0) and have looked good while beating their opponents. The last time the Red Wings began a season 4-0 was in the 1997-1998 season, which saw the team raise the Stanley Cup at the end.

The Washington Capitals are the only other team in the NHL to have begun this season undefeated, but the Wings are the only team in the entire league to have posted two shutouts already. Back-up goalie Ty Conklin posted his shutout against the Colorado Avalanche, while starter Jimmy Howard shut out the Vancouver Canucks.

Not only are the goalies doing well, but the rest of the team has been very productive too. The Wings’ have 10 forwards or defensemen with at least one goal, and 17 skaters who have at least 1 point. Through 4 games, the Wings have scored 13 goals, but have only given up 5. Only time will tell whether they can keep up the success throughout this season, but if the team wins the Stanley Cup this year, it will be #12 in ’12 and #5 for No. 5, Captain Nicklas Lidstrom.
