Peace. Love. Lights.

Rosler concentrates on light cues as she practices during a rehearsal for Our Town, the fall play performing November 8, 9, and 10.

Abby Rosler is known for her bubbly personality, electrifying smile, and infectious humor. You would think she’d be on stage performing the most dramatic monologues and belting out classic tunes all while dancing in flowing dresses. She does quite the contrary, however. Her post is situated behind the light board, in a small room—full of blinking buttons and electronic equipment to the ceilings—in the back of the auditorium, with a headset strapped to her head, commanding the technicalities of the performances in dim lighting.

Rosler discusses her part on Lights and Sound Crew and how she has come to love her involvement in the Drama Department.

When and how did you become a part of the lights crew?

I joined light crew last spring for the musical Annie Get Your Gun. I got involved, because I was sport-less and my parents encouraged me to sign up for something to do with the play. I don’t like heavy labor so I signed up for lights, and I didn’t think I would be chosen, but I was!

What are you responsible for during the performances?

During the shows I am responsible for controlling the light board, to make sure the lighting is correct on the stage. I also call the show, which means through the headset I tell other people what they should be doing.

What has been your favorite show so far? Why?

I have only been on two shows, but my favorite would have to be Annie Get Your Gun. It was my favorite because it was my first show, and I loved the story! Also, the music was super catchy!

How did you learn to use the lights?

I learned how to do the lights last year! Erin Hand, who graduated last year, and Mrs. Eddy taught me everything I know. I am still learning though.

What is your favorite light cue?

For this play my favorite cue would have to be the cue with the ladders! It looks so mystical with the blue background and white light on the ladders!

How are you able to balance school work with rigorous rehearsal schedules?

Rehearsals really do take a lot of time. I feel like I am at school for forever! And junior year is such a tough year, so balancing is tricky. Usually after rehearsal I go straight to Starbucks and finish the majority of my homework, then I will go home eat a late dinner, and finish the rest.  I am usually up super late, but it’s worth it.
