Love, Peace, and Soul

Don Cornelius, the creator of the hit musical variety show Soul Train, passed away last Wednesday. Cornelius was the show’s host from 1971-1993. Soul Train was enjoyed by many people. Parents still remember pretending they were in the “soul train line’ in front of their televisions on Saturday afternoons. Soul Train featured R&B, soul, and hip-hop artists along with occasional funk, jazz, disco, and gospel performers. Cornelius’ success is evident through the show’s widespread popularity. Soul Train is the longest, continuously running first-run syndicated program in television history. The show cancelled in 2006 with over 1,000 episodes aired. There is speculation that Cornelius committed suicide, however, there is no evidence to prove that yet. Those who grew up during Soul Train’s most popular years cannot forget how that show made them feel. All races enjoyed the show, and it undoubtedly promoted racial harmony. It evoked happiness for the 45-minute duration it lasted. Soul Train’s motto reminds people of how to be happy and live a good life. Remember to always have “Love, Peace, and Soul.”
