Rising Gas Prices

According to SustainableBusiness.com the price of gas has gone up almost 50 cents since the end of April to now.

For Mercy girls that hold part time jobs to pay for their own gas this has been a detrimental blow. Thinking back to the gas price skyrocket of 2008 some have remained hopeful that in six months time the price will be back to a reasonable $2.75 per gallon but it’s become apparent that won’t be the case.

Thanks to recent rebellion against the Libyan government crude oil prices have greatly increased. (USA Today). Two months ago Tom Kloza, chief analyist at the Oil Price Information Service, expected prices to peak at $3.75 a gallon. It’s obvious now his prediction was unfortunately incorrect.

Michigan has one of the highest gas price averages of the 50 states. Wyoming is currently paying the least, only $3.60 per gallon, 60 cents less than Michigan at $4.20 per gallon. Hawaii is paying the most, $4.60 per gallon.

The awful truth is that prices aren’t expected to fall until after the summer, and with the general trend being increase rather than decrease Mercy girls can be expected to pay upwards of $5 a gallon, an all time high.

What could that mean for the summer? When it comes to vacations, road trips are out of the question. The price of flying will increase as well, because the price of any fuel is going up.

Save on gas by carpooling, utilizing cruise control and by paying in cash. Keep tires inflated, don’t accelerate at lightening speed and don’t exceed the speed limit.
