New York Fashion Week Off to a Fresh Start

Can you believe it? It is that time of year again. Yes, that’s right. It is already Fashion Week. Although London, Milan, and Paris Fashion Weeks have yet to begin, New York Fashion Week is already off to a fantastic start. Editors have flocked from around the world just to witness some of New York’s greatest.

Some of the best collections so far have been from the younger designers. Prabal Gurung, a frequent favorite, showcased florals in his designers. Working with a London printmaker, Gurung engineered abstract floral designs with curiously placed sheers and cutouts. Another already eminent trend is active and street-wear, seen in both Alexander Wang and Rag & Bone. Although fashion favorites, Narciso Rodriguez and Vera Wang have shown ethereal, wispy white dresses that will be quite handy when the summer weather rolls around.

Additionally, some celebrities-turned-designers have become of fashion’s favorites. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen of the Row designed one of their best collections so far, featuring pale pink and white. Victoria Beckham’s namesake collection has also gained respect; this season features her usual perfectly tailored dresses featuring leather straps and other techniques. Her capsule collection, Victoria by Victoria Beckham, was also well received.

Finally, some fashion veterans have produced some fabulous collections so far. At Zac Posen, tailored dresses followed by gorgeous ball gowns dominated the collection. Taking an unexpected turn, Oscar De La Renta featured ball gowns too, influenced by Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin.

Already off to a great start, Fashion Week has provided us with some new, fresh inspirations for spring. Although fall has just begun, Mercy girls can already plan fun spring outfits based off of abstract florals, white, and pale pastels.
