Recently, the crime drama TV series Dexter has become popular among Mercy students. The show’s last episode aired on Sept. 22, 2013. After about a year-and-a-half lapse, Dexter seems to be making a comeback among viewers.

“My dad watched it and was obsessed with it,” said junior Claudia Shaw.

Shaw commented that it was her father who introduced her to the show.

“Although it’s really violent, it is full of suspense and mysterious. I like to figure out what happens next.”

It is centered on the life of Dexter Morgan, a forensic blood-spatter analyst by day and a serial killer by night. However, Dexter is a unique mass murderer as he only kills criminals who have slipped through the cracks of the justice system.

The series takes viewers through the double life he has taken on to survive. At three years old, Dexter watched his mom get murdered in front of him. At the scene of the crime, he was saved by policeman Harry Morgan who would later become his foster father. Although Dexter does not remember anything, he feels the need to kill. Harry recognizes this and teaches Dexter how to channel it by teaching him a code of survival with the number one rule being to not get caught.

“[Dexter] cares about things, but it’s almost as if he’s emotionless,” Shaw said. “I like him because even though what he does is bad, he’s kind of like a hero.”

Based loosely on the novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay, the TV series lasted eight seasons. If you’re looking for something new to watch, you should put Dexter on your list.

“I just love the show. I can never stop watching,” said Shaw.
